Why AI will never replace Great Doctors

Every few weeks, another headline appears claiming that AI will replace doctors.
I believe we are asking the wrong question.
The real question isn’t whether AI will replace clinicians—it’s whether clinicians who embrace AI will deliver better care than those who don’t.
After more than two decades in clinical practice and healthcare leadership, one lesson has remained constant: Medicine has always been about people before technology.
A patient is far more than laboratory results, imaging studies, or clinical algorithms. Every important medical decision requires empathy, ethical judgment, experience, communication, and an understanding of each patient’s unique circumstances—qualities that no algorithm can fully replicate.
At the same time, ignoring AI would be a mistake.
Today, AI is helping us detect diseases earlier, interpret medical images more accurately, predict clinical deterioration, personalize treatment decisions, accelerate research, and reduce the administrative burden that contributes to clinician burnout.
These advances are not replacing physicians—they are expanding what physicians can achieve.
I believe the future of healthcare belongs to clinicians who combine human intelligence with artificial intelligence.

Because while AI can analyze millions of data points in seconds, it cannot replace the trust built during a difficult conversation, the reassurance offered to an anxious family, or the clinical wisdom developed through years of caring for patients.
Ultimately, the greatest value of AI will not be measured by how advanced the technology becomes, but by how many lives it improves, how many medical errors it prevents, and how many patients experience better outcomes.
The hospitals that lead the next decade will not simply adopt AI—they will build cultures where technology enhances clinical excellence while keeping patients at the center of every decision.
