SAAR
MEDICAL CENTER

Saar Medical And Dental Center was opened
in October 2000 as an extension of the services of the American
Mission Hospital. Its location in Saar, in a residential area, makes
it very convenient for a large section of the population who would
otherwise have to travel to the main hospital in Manama.
The clinic is open from
8am to 10pm from Saturday to Thursday, and from 8am to 4pm on Friday
and on most public holidays.
The aim of the medical clinic is to provide general medical services
in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. There is a comfortable waiting
room with a children's play area. A
general practitioner is on duty throughout the day, and a pediatrician
does morning and afternoon sessions most days. A
nutritionist/dietitian is available by appointment.
Routine
vaccinations are available, with these exceptions:
Meningococcal vaccination is done only on certain days, so an appointment
should be booked in advance. However,
BCG vaccination is only done at the main hospital.
We provide a full range
of laboratory services using our laboratory in Manama. For most
tests blood (or other specimens) can be taken in the clinic and
sent to the lab by our courier service.
X-ray and ultrasound facilities are not available on site but can
be arranged at the main hospital.
Saar Medical Center can deal with minor injuries,
e.g. small cuts which require suturing, but major trauma cases,
seriously ill or unconscious patients and injuries requiring X-ray
should be taken to the main hospital or a facility with an A&E
Department.

Fissure Sealant program
The department Dental Services at the American
Mission Hospital now offers dental fissure sealant preventive program.
This program is directed to children, ages 7-9 years.
What is fissure sealant?
Fissure sealant is a protective plastic cover
that seals the fissures in the biting surfaces of primary and permanent
molars (back teeth). It does not involve any drilling inside the
tooth. A gel is painted on the tooth surface. I is set (becomes
hard and sticks to the tooth) by a special light-curing device.
What teeth should be covered?
Mainly the first primary and permanent molars.
These teeth are the most prone to cavities.
Why should 7-9 year old children have fissure
sealants?
After a dental screening, you will need to arrange
transport to American Mission Hospital,
Where 10-20 children can be taken everyday accompanied by a teacher.
The dental hygienist will spend 10-20 minutes with each child to
complete the application of fissure sealants, depending on the number
of teeth needing to be covered, After finishing, the students can
be taken back to school / club.
How much do fissure sealants cost?
Fees are BD 4.000 for each tooth. For example,
the total fee for four teeth would be BD 16.000. Generally, no more
than four would be sealed for any given child.
What is the exam and treatment process?
Teeth are sealed at AMH Dental Services after
being examined in your school/ club by a dental hygienist. If some
teeth do not require current sealant coverage the child will be
given a report indicating a follow up evaluation date. A brief report
regarding sealant recommendations will also be provided for each
student for parental review. A complete and more through diagnostic
exam appointment can be scheduled as the dental hygienist recommends.
This appointment can naturally be scheduled with your treating family
dentist as well. Also, participating students will receive a 15%
discount on exams and all recommended restorative dental services
at AMH.
Finally if your school is interested in this program
please respond via fax or phone.. Please call if you have any further
questions. We are certain this program will contribute to improving
your childs dental health.
