The General Practice Department continues to be the Nerve Center of the American Mission Hospital.
Individual experiences range from 5-30 years, some with additional skills in Surgery, ENT, Pain Management, Anesthesia, Pulmonology, OB/GYN, Infection Control & Health Promotion, Kidney Dialysis, Leprosy Care, Anti-Smoking Campaign, Community Clinics, Counseling, Leadership and Management.
The GPs run the Urgent Care Unit, attend on out-patients and also admit in-patients to the ward if necessary.
Our members stretch from the Far East to the United Kingdom, speaking English, Arabic, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Urdu etc

DR. SUSAN SAMUEL ISAAC

Dr. Susan had a rigorous training in one of the well-known colleges in India, Christian Medical College, and has a background of working in two Christian mission hospitals. She then moved to Bahrain to join the American Mission Hospital as a general practitioner.
Dr. Susan has picked up enough Arabic to be able to converse with her patients, so "Ahlan wa Sahlan". She can also speak some Telegu, Kannada, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. She keeps herself abreast in the constantly expanding field of medicine through reading a variety of medical journals and by participating in Continuing Medical Education programs.

Dr. Jaya, a General Practitioner with more than 20 years experience joined AMH in 1996 and enjoys a busy practice with between 20 and 30 patients per day. She believes that "Prevention is better than cure" and advises her patients to practice preventative measures." I am a very positive person and the words NO, NOT and CANNOT are not in my vocabulary." Says Dr Jaya emphatically.

He performs most of the 1000+ circumcisions each year. His administrative responsibilities also include the training of new medical staff. Dr Richie says "This is a challenging task but with the team atmosphere, we all learn from each others strengths and weaknesses."

Personal introduction: Having been a resident physician in a mission hospital in Yemen for almost 13 years, has enriched me and my husband Dr. Edmund in our practical knowledge as physicians as we had our training ground and busy practice in General Medicine, OB/Gyn, Surgery and Pediatrics.
We have gained an abundance of fulfilling and rewarding experiences in the mission field and were also blessed with two children. When we left Yemen for good in 1995, I worked as Medical Officer in the Dept. of Medicine at Ilocos Norte Provincial Hospital, a busy government hospital in the Philippines. Throughout his 32 years in medical practice, Dr. Kalyan has been interested and involved in the alleviation of pain and has been able to do so through his specialty in Anesthesia. General Practice has given him the foundation for understanding people with the variables in sickness.
Working in the two fields of Anesthesia and General Practice, has enabled him to extend his expertise in the advice, education, treatment and management of chronic pain.
"Pain is an essential for life as it serves as a defense mechanism and sharpens the senses for full preservation. However, when pain persists, as in chronic pain, it affects the person's psychological well being and produces feelings of anger, sadness, depression and often hopelessness. I consider it a personal responsibility to give to the patient some glimmer of hope through the experience and knowledge I have been blessed with. It takes time, but that's what we're here for", says Dr. Kalyan.
