'Doctors for the Kingdom' is a fascinating
read, the dramatic and inspiring true story of
how missionary doctors entered Arabia - more than
100 years ago - determined to bring healing through their the
skilled hands and dedicated hearts.
Following the lives of many doctors who served
with the Bahrain-based American Mission Hospital, this
beautifully-illustrated book taps extensively into the memoirs and
recollections of those doctors who were privileged to travel from
their new homeland into Saudi Arabia to apply their
skills not just to the ordinary people of the country but also to
the King's Court during the period 1913-1955.
This 184-page book captures the heart-warming and
often dramatic events faced by the doctors and, at a deeper level,
reveals the rapport and trust built between Christians and Muslims
as a result of their travels over the years.
With the hospital celebrating its Centennial year
in 2003, the author also takes the opportunity to look at the
continuing work of the American Mission Hospital today, the ongoing
trust placed in it by the local and expatriate population, and the
challenges facing the hospital – with financial support essential to
ensure that the hospital can continue to operate as a not-for-profit
health care service for another 100 years.

The remarkable 100-year history of American
Mission Hospital in Bahrain is attractively featured in a 288-page
hard-back book entitled 'Through the Changing Scenes of Life'.
The author Angela Clarke succinctly recaptures
the spirit of the hospital from the pioneering
endeavors of the early missionaries
through to the struggles to build the first hospital, and from the
sacrifice made by so many doctors and nurses through to the outreach
into other Arab countries.
Complemented by a range of endearing photographs
and practical illustrations from throughout the period, this
colorful book is indeed much more than a story about a hospital;
rather, it represents a rare insight into a century of social
development in the Kingdom.
And it reveals not just the impact that the
hospital has had on the country of Bahrain as a leader in health
care but also as a daily bridge-builder between Christians and
Muslims in the region for 100 years.
