Doctors for the Kingdom

The work of the American Mission Hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

By Dr. Paul L. Armerding, CMO

Price: BD15

Tel AMH: 253447 ext. 267

'Doctors for the Kingdom' is a fascinating read, the dramatic and inspiring true story of how missionary doctors entered Arabia - more than 100 years ago - determined to bring healing through their the skilled hands and dedicated hearts.

Following the lives of many doctors who served with the Bahrain-based American Mission Hospital, this beautifully-illustrated book taps extensively into the memoirs and recollections of those doctors who were privileged to travel from their new homeland into Saudi Arabia to apply their skills not just to the ordinary people of the country but also to the King's Court during the period 1913-1955.

This 184-page book captures the heart-warming and often dramatic events faced by the doctors and, at a deeper level, reveals the rapport and trust built between Christians and Muslims as a result of their travels over the years.

With the hospital celebrating its Centennial year in 2003, the author also takes the opportunity to look at the continuing work of the American Mission Hospital today, the ongoing trust placed in it by the local and expatriate population, and the challenges facing the hospital – with financial support essential to ensure that the hospital can continue to operate as a not-for-profit health care service for another 100 years.

Through the Changing Scenes of Life

By Angela Clarke

Price: BD11

Tel AMH: 253447 ext. 267

The remarkable 100-year history of American Mission Hospital in Bahrain is attractively featured in a 288-page hard-back book entitled 'Through the Changing Scenes of Life'.

The author Angela Clarke succinctly recaptures the spirit of the hospital from the pioneering endeavors of the early missionaries through to the struggles to build the first hospital, and from the sacrifice made by so many doctors and nurses through to the outreach into other Arab countries.

Complemented by a range of endearing photographs and practical illustrations from throughout the period, this colorful book is indeed much more than a story about a hospital; rather, it represents a rare insight into a century of social development in the Kingdom.

And it reveals not just the impact that the hospital has had on the country of Bahrain as a leader in health care but also as a daily bridge-builder between Christians and Muslims in the region for 100 years.

CENTENNIAL SONG

Samuel And Amy Zwemer were the founding pioneers of The Arabian Mission's medical service in Bahrain which, over a century, evolved to become the American Mission Hospital Society, Bahrain.

When, on January 25, 1937, Amy Zwemer passed away in New York, her husband Samuel, to whom she had been married for forty-one years, wrote a moving tribute to his pioneering partner and wife:

*Song to be released on 26th January 2003*

Verse 1:Samuel Zwemer and Amy Zwemer

Her love was like an island
In life's ocean, vast and wide,
A peaceful, quiet shelter
From wind and rain and tide.

Chorus:

'Twas bound on the north by hope,
By patience on the west,
By tender counsel on the south
And on the east by rest.

Verse 2:

His love was like an Anchor
In a stormy, tossing sea.
He held when others wavered;
He withstood adversity.

Chorus:

Verse 3:

God's mercy was their comfort,
His love their needs fulfilled
They gave themselves completely,
They lived to do his will.

Chorus:

Verse 4:

Their efforts came together
A firm foundation laid;
A place for others' healing
They reached out to give aid.

Chorus:

Verse 5:

Above them like a beacon light,
Shone faith and truth and prayer;
And through the changing scenes of life,
Many found a haven there…

Oh…and through the changing scenes of life,
May you find a haven there.

Riyanka Leah Subramanyam
